2012′s Scottish Grand National was won by Merigo. This takes the Scottish Grand National victory tally to two for the 11 year old, who also came in second in the race last year. It was almost as tight a finish as the Aintree Grand National with Merigo winning by a head.
Second place was taken by Auroras Encore, third to King Fontaine and fourth place went to Harry the Viking, the 6-1 favourite on the day and the horse co-owned by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Due to the fatalities at Aintree, the Ayr course introduced some additional safety measures. These seemed to pay off as out of the fourteen horses that didn’t make the finish, none fell.
Merigo was ridden by Timmy Murphy, owned by Raymond Anderson Green and trained by Andrew Parker.
